Lock out tag out procedure:

Alert affected employees that a lock out or tag out system will be in a situation to use and why.

• The authorized employee must be aware of the type and amount of energy used by the machine or equipment, as well as the hazards associated with it.

• If the machine or equipment is still operational, shut it down using the standard stopping process – depress stop button, open toggle switch, etc.

• Turn on the switch, valve, or another energy isolating device to disconnect the machine from its power supply. Stored energy (such as that in springs, elevated machine members, revolving flywheels, hydraulic systems, and air, gas, steam, or water pressure, among other things) must be released or restrained using techniques such as repositioning, blocking, and so on.

• Lock out/tag out the energy isolating devices using individually assigned locks or tags.

• After checking that no workers are exposed and that all energy sources have been removed, operate the push button or other normal operating controls to ensure that the machine does not operate.

• CAUTION: After the test, return the operating control to the neutral or off position.

• The equipment has now been locked or tagged out.
